Splashing Along the Scioto

One thing that Columbus does not have a shortage of is splash parks/fountains for kids to run through. And the granddaddy of them all just opened last week in a renovated downtown park along the Scioto River. The water play area is huge, thank goodness--anything smaller couldn't have possibly accommodated the six million kids who were there with us today. Geesh.

For some reason Nico and Rocco are always initially timid when we go to a splash park, even when crowds are not a factor. I knew the extra craziness of this new park would make them uncomfortable, so we met up with their pals Rowan and Henry for a little positive peer pressure...and ended up having a blast.

Now, take any sense you get for the size of this splash area from the photo above and double it. That's about how big it is...and that's about how impossible it is to keep track of your kids. I was a nervous wreck trying to keep my eyes on both boys. Fortunately, they pretty much stuck to playing in one relatively small area...most of the time. About the moment we were ready to pack it up for the day, Rocco (who else?) discovered that he had been missing about 50 percent more park and took off. He made it all the way to a grassy knoll separating the park from the river before I caught up to him. Needless to say, it was time head home! Not sure what's in store for the next visit...might wait until Mark can go with us so we can play man-to-man defense.
